What is moissanite?

Moissanite (silicon carbide) was first discovered in 1893 by the French scientist Henri Moissan, in a meteorite crater. In nature it is so rare that today every moissanite gem is grown in a laboratory, crystal by crystal. The result is a gem of exceptional purity and fire, created responsibly, with no mining.

Moissanite vs. cubic zirconia

Moissanite is not cubic zirconia, and the difference is easy to see.

• More fire: moissanite has a higher refractive index (about 2.65–2.69, vs. about 2.15–2.18 for cubic zirconia) and far more dispersion, so it throws more brilliance and rainbow sparkle.
• Harder: 9.25 on the Mohs scale, vs. about 8–8.5 for cubic zirconia, so it resists scratches for everyday wear.
• Stays brilliant: cubic zirconia can turn cloudy over time. Moissanite keeps its sparkle for a lifetime.
